NODL represents a quantification of the utility provided by edge nodes to network users. In the first phase of the network, the main utility shared through the network is connectivity for smart devices.

As such, NODL can be seen as first as a quantification of the value of the bandwidth, and the value of renting the computing, storage, and bluetooth capability of the smartphone.

Nodle Chain

The Nodle Chain is Polkadot's 11th Parachain powering the Nodle Network. It is used to settle network incentives and contracts in the form of Nodle Cash ($NODL), as well as run some upcoming decentralized applications building atop the Network. It is built with the Parity Substrate framework and is available upon an open source license. Explore the chain on Subscan.

Collators

Collators are the Nodle Parachain block producers. They are responsible for creating new blocks and adding them to the chain. We will soon roll out more details on our staking feature and allow independent nodes to become a collator on our Solochain / Parachain. We are still fine-tuning the final details and running an audit, so follow us on Twitter to know when this happens.

A 21B max supply

The maximum supply of the NODL token is 21 billion, no additional tokens can be minted once the protocol reaches this number. Nodle was originally built on another chain in 2018, where approximately 8.4 billion tokens were minted, it was then migrated to a native Nodle Chain in 2020.

Upon migration of Nodle Cash to its native blockchain in 2020, 60% remains unminted and 24% is in a treasury under control of the Nodle governance council of token holders. The treasure aims to stimulate the growth of the Nodle ecosystem.

The rest of the tokens constituting the max supply will be minted according to the predictable mechanisms described in section "token issuance". Original stellar blockchain can be tracked here.

Distribution

The 12.6 billion remaining tokens are periodically issued to reward edge nodes (smartphones running the SDK), network operators (agents operating the network and the oracles ensuring edge nodes behave properly), and collators for their participation in the network.

Initially the infrastructure needs to be built. A limited supply entails scarcity, which gives competitive advantage for first movers to participate in building the supply for the network. When the network gets built, there is competition on the supply side, as the network builders are fighting for the subsidy.

Missions at the edge

Within eight years of the existence of the network, the issuance marks an inflexion point: the theoretical limit at which the growth of the total network rewards issued for nodes will start slowing down as they are outpaced by smart missions on the network.

Smart missions stem from a massive pool of use cases broadly described as swarm computing. In the first years of its existence, it is expected that the network will be used primarily by the IoT industry, providing connectivity to smart devices at the edges. Essentially, the network leverages nodes to connect things with things. As of 2022, the network is also seeing developments to leverage its ability to connect things with people through nodes, where people are the owners of the smartphones acting as the nodes.
